Lent at Zion

Lenten Worship
at 3:30 & 7:00 p.m. Wednesdays

Lenten Supper
at 6:00 p.m. Wednesdays

This year's Lenten sermon series:  The Son of God Goes Forth to War
“The LORD will march out like a mighty man, like a warrior he will stir up his zeal; with a shout he will raise the battle cry and will triumph over his enemies.”  (Isaiah 42:13)
This year's theme for the Lenten sermons is “The Son of God Goes Forth to War.”  Scripture is filled with imagery and descriptions of our Savior Jesus as the warrior who fights and defeats sin, death, and Satan. Each service focuses on an aspect of our Savior-warrior as he is promised to us, fights our enemies for us, and triumphs over them for us.

This Lenten season at Zion we are once again privileged to have a variety of pastors leading us in our Wednesday worship. All pastors are from WELS congregations in the greater Madison area. Below you will find listed who will be the presiding minister and what he will be preaching on for that week.  May God bless our Lenten worship this year!

Why do we have midweek Lenten worship services at Zion?

"Lent" refers to the six weeks prior to Easter.  Some people view the church's season of Lent as "boring" or "depressing."  It is just a time when you have to give up something you like, right?  No!  At Zion we view Lent as a very special part of the church year.  Yes, Lenten worship services are often serious, but that is for a reason.  Lent and Lenten worship give us another opportunity to reflect on God's Word and Jesus' saving work.  Through the Biblical accounts that we learn about during Lent, we are reminded of the depths of our sin.  All of us sin every day, falling far short of the perfection that God demands.  We are helpless and hopeless, doomed to death, in desperate need of a Savior.  Yet during Lent we also see how Jesus Christ is that Savior that we so desperately need!  Jesus came to this earth and perfectly kept God's law--all of it.  Through his innocent suffering, crucifixion, and triumphant resurrection Jesus earned eternal life for us.  Some of the most beautiful hymns in our hymnal are Lenten hymns, and that is because Lent reminds us of God's grace, and there is nothing more beautiful than that!

We hope that you are able to join us Wednesdays to learn of God's amazing love for us and find the peace that only Jesus can bring.

What's for Supper?

To help you feed your soul, we will also feed your body! We know that attending a weeknight worship service can be a challenge, and to help you meet that challenge we offer a supper at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday evenings before our evening Lenten worship service. Volunteers from Zion prepare a meal each week; all you need to bring is yourself. A tentative menu will be posted below as the information becomes available (subject to change).
