Devotional Books for Children & Families

God tells us that he wants us to spend time with the Word he has given us.  In Deuteronomy 6:5-9 God says, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.  These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.  Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.  Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.  Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates."  God doesn't want us to meditate on his Word only one hour on Sunday morning!  Having devotions at home can seem like an overwhelming task, but it does not need to be.  You can have simple, short devotions that still teach the truths of God's Word.  Find a time in your day when your family is typically together so that your devotion time can become an intentional habit.  Mealtime and bedtime are two popular options.  A simple format is reading a Bible story, singing a hymn, and saying a prayer.  Below you will find some resources to use during family devotions.

The Story Bible by Edward A. Engelbrecht & Gail E. Pawlitz (eds.)

This book includes chronological Bible stories with questions, an action item, and a prayer at the end of each story.  It takes about 5 minutes to complete a story.  This resource is geared for families with elementary-age and younger children.  A beautiful, realistic, detailed picture that helps tell the story accompanies each account.  The larger size of the book makes it easy for multiple children to see the pictures or read along.  The language and questions are appropriate for younger children, including toddlers and preschoolers.  The lessons are simple enough that older children can read the account and do the questions with younger children.

120 Bible Stories by Dawn Mirly Weinstock & Gail E. Pawlitz (eds.)

This book features chronological Bible accounts with questions at the end of each; every lesson also includes a Bible verse to remember.  It takes about 5-10 minutes to go through one account.  This resource is appropriate for older elementary-age children (ages 8-12) and their families.  The lessons follow the Bible account closely and include a beautiful, realistic, detailed picture that help explain the lesson.  This book gives many details and uses more advanced language and more challenging questions (as compared to The Story Bible, above), which is helpful for older children.  However, because of this it is a little harder to keep younger children's attention when using this book.

Luther's Catechism by Dr. Martin Luther

The new edition of Luther's Catechism from Northwestern Publishing House is designed to engage and equip generations, today and in the future, with the basic truths of God's holy Word.  Developed in collaboration with the Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary education department, this catechism includes Luther's six chief parts of the catechism with explanations:  the Ten Commandments, the Apostles' Creed, the Lord's Prayer, Baptism, the Use of Keys and Confession, and the Lord's Supper.  It includes a question-and-answer approach that develops a child's ability to discover truths directly from the Bible; a "Connections" section at the end of each unit that introduces a Bible history or other larger section from Scripture, together with thought questions to elicit discussion; and quotes from Luther and hymn verses at the end of each unit that encourage use as a devotional tool.  This resource is particularly useful for middle-school-age and high-school-age children and their families.   While Luther's Catechism is studied in confirmation class, it is very useful to go through it at home also as your children grow and have different experiences that lead to a broader understanding of what the catechism and God's Word means.

Christian Worship:  A Lutheran Hymnal

As WELS Lutherans we are blessed to have a wonderful hymnal with songs filled with the truths of Scripture that we use during our worship services at church.  This hymnal is also a wonderful resource to be used in home devotions.  You may want to sing a hymn as part of your devotional ritual.  One suggestion is to choose one hymn for each season of the church year (Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, etc.) and sing that hymn each time you do a devotion during that season.  This repetition helps children learn the hymn and commit it to memory.  However, the hymnal is a great resource for home devotions even if you do not sing!  There are prayers and devotions for personal use located in the front of the hymnal.  You could also read the beautiful, poetic words from a hymn and discuss what they mean; this is one way to engage older children in your home devotions.
